What is Turmeric?

It is a spice that comes from the turmeric plant. Commonly used by Asian people in food. It is the main spice in curry. In taste, it is bitter and warm. It is frequently used for flavoring and coloring curry powders, mustards, butter, and cheeses.

How to make Turmeric powder at home?

Turmeric powder at home can be made by using either an oven, dehydrator or even it can be made by drying it in sunlight.

All the methods are with their own pros and cons, when you are drying it in the oven it takes the least amount of time but on the other hand, it adds the highest heat to the process. Likewise when using the dehydration method which obviously requires having a dehydrator at home which many do not have, though it is with lower heat and only a couple of extra hours are needed in this way than the oven method takes. There is also another method that is time taking but assume the natural and best way to dry the turmeric and make the turmeric powder at home is known Air-drying it requires a lot of patience and good weather conditions. To do it in the summer or warm well-ventilated area is the best. It takes about 14 days longer period to dry it fully or maybe longer run depending on the weather and heat.

You need fresh turmeric root or rhizomes as per your need but it is good to dry for a whole long period.

Start all the process by cleaning and peeling the turmeric root. Use gloves as the turmeric will stain your hands and nails and place an old towel or a sheet to protect the area of work from stains. After you have peeled the roots of turmeric cut them into thin slices or you can use a vegetable peeler and peel the slices. As the piece is thinner the quicker the drying process will be.

Arrange the slices on the baking tray lined with baking paper try not to overlap but the pieces can touch. In another method, you can arrange them on the dehydrator tray when using the dehydrator. About two hours at 100ºC bake in the oven have a check on about after 1.5 hours all the process is depending upon the thickness and water content and on the heat of your oven, it may require less or more time. When using dehydrator it requires 40ºC for about 4–5 hours. Air dry method can be used for that you need well-ventilated spot but with up to 14 days longer period which depends on the humidity of your area’s weather.

When it’s crunchy dry turmeric is ready. The slices will be shrunk in size after drying. For checking if they are completely dry snap a piece in half. If it’s bendy it means it is not ready yet.

When once you are done with baking, dehydrating or air drying add the slices to a food processor or a grinder and grind them to a fine powder.

Through a sieve sift the powder for collecting the bigger chunks which will need to be ground again.

Store the turmeric powder in a dry dark and clean place after putting it in a clean glass jar. It can be stored for a year to use.
